We are Jem & Alex

We felt we’d take this opportunity to introduce (or reintroduce) ourselves to everyone and to put a face behind our business.

We are a husband & wife team from Taunton in Somerset. We have 4 lovely children who keep us focused on what’s really important in life. We love the West country landscape and spend many hours hiking on the hills or visiting the coast to walk, surf or just read a good book.

Jem has obtained over the years post grad MA’s in both Interior Design and Creative writing. She also worked for more than a decade as a Colour Consultant for Dulux Paints, providing interior and exterior design schemes for many blue chip clients. She’s currently working on her second novel.

Alex has built up a longstanding business decorating and renovating beautiful buildings. Prior to this he worked in hospitality, as front of house manager in many independent restaurants.

Between the two of us we consider ourselves to be organised, creative and driven; attention to detail is important to us both.

Above all we have always enjoyed and appreciated traveling, staying in nice accommodation (albeit at times a tent) and eating good wholesome food.

In early 2018 we decided to start the short-term accommodation business ‘Hit The Hay’ as a way to ease Alex out of working ‘on the tools’ decorating and felt it was a good way to utilise skills we already had.

Our philosophy is built around wanting to deliver all these elements to our visitors in the form of stylish, comfortable accomodation for the perfect stay, be it for work or leisure. We cater for this all year round and provide workstations/desks for those who require them.

We have, over the last 2 ½ years, welcomed many guests from all around the world and take great pride in offering a genuinely first-rate service to all our guests. The thing that really makes us tick is working to get great reviews from our guests time and time again. Everyone has their own priorities: location: comfort needs: facilities. For most, these priorities are universal: communication: cleanliness: a comfortable bed. Our job is to get them all right….
